Pre-Proposal

I had been hoping for a proposal for a couple of months (specifically since his brothers had both just proposed to their girlfriends) and I hinted. Okay I hinted heavily... I'm a bit ashamed of myself for that. I KNEW he was going to propose at some point. The man had moved across the country for me! A proposal was incoming, it was just a matter of when...

During one of our 'hinting' conversations the topic of ring prices came up. My jaw not only hit the floor... it passed through the carpet, beneath the concrete and into the dirt. Mr. Ticket's expectations of what he should be spending on a ring for me more than tripled the number I had imagined! He was going off of a calculation FSIL Ticket had given him, 3 months gross salary. Well after moving across the country and trying to survive on a barely decent wage in expensive Southern California I in NO way expected a number even close to this. I knew how much money he made, I knew how much he had in savings, I was thinking of a far more modest number. Oh I'll just give you the numbers already because all of this 'hinting' is confusing me.

Requirement for ring shopping.

Poor Mr. Ticket was under the impression that he should be spending $7,000-$8,000 on my ring. I was hoping he would spend $2,000-$3,000. See the massive difference there?! I even thought my figure of $3,000 was really high and I would be extremely lucky to receive such an amazing ring. After this talk it was pretty clear that Mr. Ticket was warming up to the idea of proposing sooner rather than later. Apparently his extreme hesitation came from the fear of how long it would take to save up for a ring.

First Second obstacle conquered. Yay!(Cross country move counts as first obstacle)
Did you and your fiance ever have talks about ring prices before he proposed? Were your numbers as far apart as ours were?
